History

The town was founded in 827 by the Arabs.  In 1923 Mussolini removed the Arabic name “Zabut” changing the towns name to “Sambuca di Sicilia.”  Many of the buildings were damaged or destroyed by an earthquake in 1968.  After this earthquake new residences were built outside the old town preserving the medieval layout.

 

Land

Near Lake Arancio, Sambuca di Sicilia sits on a hilltop in a hilly/mountainous region.  The town is located between the Belice and Sosio rivers.

Sambuca di Sicilia is located in the Agrigento Province of Sicily about 60km northwest of Agrigento and 60km southwest of Palermo.
